Minnie Mouse Costume

Posted by Ally at Friday, September 28, 2012 0 comments
So working in a school means that every year I usually have to come up with two Halloween costumes. Usually I spend all my time thinking up and executing my grown ups only costume and am scrambling at the last minute to come up with something school appropriate that doesn't end up with me dressed like a banana. I draw the line at fruit.

This year I decided to plan early and I figured that Minnie Mouse would be a safe (and easy) bet. I found this dress on ModCloth which I love and knew I wanted to own. The best part is that it's perfect for my Minnie Mouse costume too! I've never owned a pair of Crocs before, but I've heard they're super comfortable and these are surprising stylish. I got my pair on ebay, but if these are as comfortable as people say I might invest in another pair.

I'm all set for Halloween now (well I still have to wait for all the packages to arrive). I'm kind of excited. Though for the first time in years I'm not sure if I'm going to be having a Halloween party or not. I guess we'll see how the rest of the month goes.

September Birchbox

So after reading tons of blogs that have birchbox features, I thought I would try it. The premise is that for $10 you get to sample makeup, skincare, and lifestyle products from different high-end brands. So this is what I got in my first birchbox:

Halloween Costumes (for cats)

Posted by Ally at Monday, September 10, 2012 0 comments
So I was in Petsmart the other day getting new collars and hairball formula for Darcy and saw the cutest Halloween costumes for dogs. It got me thinking about costumes for cats, and with a little searching I found the meager offerings. They were all adorable, limited quantity that there was. So, of course, when I got home I had to check the internet and I found a few more.

Cowboy - Petco

Shark Fin - Petco

Fairy Wings - Petsmart

Superhero - Petco

Mermaid - Petco

I imagine one of my cats would be just fine with dressing up, but the other would probably freak out. Even knowing that it would likely last only a few minutes, I'm still kind of tempted to do it. Have you ever dressed your cat up? How'd they feel about that?

Personal Intro for Moi (lengthy)

Posted by Laura at Sunday, September 09, 2012 1 comments
Hello all out in the blogosphere! I'd like to present myself, Laura, for your consideration for the position of Kittens and Kicks blog writer. Yes? I'm in? YESSS *fist pump*

So, recently I moved in with my boyfriend due to some unfortunate circumstances with my apartment situation. It's a lot of getting used to, especially considering 95% of my stuff (clothing included) is in a storage unit. In addition, the kitchen is woeful, the main big problem being that there is no oven. The kitchen appliances available to me are a microwave, a small toaster oven, and two stovetop burners. This is supposed to be a full kitchen in a standard single family home.

To me, the kitchen is where my self-power originates; it is the home for my soul. To have a poorly equipped kitchen (let me not even mention the fact that the seasonings are old and questionable beyond measure, basic implements are missing or caked with years of grime...) to me makes me feel like I have way to ground myself, to feel settled. So, in order to accustom myself to my new surroundings, I have tried to make the best out of it.

Everything that I would normally cook in the oven - i.e. everything - I have downsized. I love baking more than anything, so not being able to bake was going to kill me. So I have downsized, making cakes in 7" round pans (disposables from Dollar Tree - 4 for $1). Also doing a lot of grilling! Can't make a full-size pizza? I made a margherita pizza on the grill last week with a packaged dough mix, and it turned out great. I currently have a cinnamon apple cake in the oven... Since the batter is meant for an 8" or 9" pan, I ended up making two 7"s... probably because I put more apple in than I should have. (Over the past few years, I have been embracing fruit-based baked goods, though I am still a chocolate girl at the core.)

In short, this whole cooking and baking thing has really reminded me how I have a good deal of ingenuity. Now these challenges, while first discouraging, have really given me something to get excited about - like how am I going to make this work? Thankfully, my boyfriend is willing to put up with some of the oddball things I want to make - there aren't many people, let alone men, who would feel like grilling a pizza on a little 20" charbroil grill. Hell, I wouldn't have considered it unless I was forced into this situation.

So please, look forward to more recipes and cooking/baking excursions from me. I am planning on making shrimp pasta in a foil package tonight. Like I said, looking for new things - new recipes, new challenges. This blog too will be a challenge - especially in the "trying to not write a novel". Please bear with me - I will try and lessen my word vomit as time goes on.

First Post

Posted by Ally at Friday, September 07, 2012 0 comments
Yay! First post. I don't know who long this layout will last, but that's ok. For now it's perfect! I've been working hard (occasionally) on getting this blog up and ready for actual use and it only took me a whole month.

It was back to school this week and that means lots of new lessons and amusement. There are lots of changes this year, not the least of being teaching third grade. Looping is going to prove to be very interesting, I think. The kids were excited for the most part. Though of the boys in my class actually cried during visitation; he didn't want summer to be over. I know how he feels! I'm looking forward to the school year though. This year I have lunch duty with second grade (cue epic sad face), though there is a silver lining in that at least I really like the other teachers who share the duty with me.

This blog is going to be a mix of fashion and personal posts in the future but for now, I guess we're starting small. If you have any questions/suggestions/etc feel free to visit the Contact Us page over on the right. We'll get back to you as soon as we can!
